Perspectives on AAAPI Advocacy: Building Inclusive Futures in New Jersey |
A dynamic exploration of the forces shaping the AAPI experience—from internal identity and mental health to grassroots advocacy and legislative action. We are honored to welcome Professor Anne Anlin Cheng (Princeton University) for a keynote address titled “Asian Pessimism.” In this provocative talk, Professor Cheng interrogates how Asians and Asian Americans are treated in higher education, how “Asian American excellence” can become a source of negativity, and how the stories we tell ourselves to thrive can, in fact, hurt us. This talk explores the multiple tensions—the affirmations and the negations—afforded by the identity category “Asian American.” Following the keynote, our three speakers, Professor Anne Anlin Cheng (Princeton University), Dr. Kani Ilangovan (Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist; Board Member, The E Pluribus Unum Project), and Hon. Balvir Singh ‘07 (Assemblyman, New Jersey Legislature) will convene for a panel discussion. Together, they will move from this critical internal reflection to the practical, grassroots, and systemic work of building a truly inclusive future for the AAPI community in New Jersey. |
May 5, 2026, 12:30-2pm, Intercultural Center, Roscoe West 201. Seats are limited, lunch is provided! RSVP by May 1 |
